TEAM NUNAVUT AT THE 2027 CANADA WINTER GAMES
Team Nunavut is proud to represent the territory at the 2027 Canada Winter Games in Quebec City, Quebec. The Canada Games bring together the country’s top young athletes for one of Canada’s largest multi-sport competitions and provide an important opportunity for Nunavut athletes to compete on the national stage.
At the 2027 Games, Team Nunavut will compete in seven sports: Badminton, U16 Male Hockey, U18 Female Hockey, Judo, Women’s Curling, Speed Skating, and Table Tennis.
The 2027 Games will also mark an exciting milestone for Team Nunavut, with U18 Female Hockey and Women’s Curling making their Canada Winter Games debut. Their participation represents the continued growth of sport opportunities for female athletes across the territory.
Team Nunavut is about more than competition. The Canada Winter Games provide athletes, coaches, managers, and mission staff with the opportunity to represent their communities and territory, gain valuable national-level experience, and build connections with participants from across Canada.
Wearing the Team Nunavut colours is a source of tremendous pride. Every athlete who competes carries with them the support of their family, community, teammates, coaches, and fellow Nunavummiut.
MISSION STAFF
Mission Staff are Team Nunavut volunteers assigned to specific sport teams. They serve as the primary link between all components of the Games, connecting athletes, coaches, managers, and parents. Mission Staff are the key contacts for their sports in the lead-up to, during, and immediately following the Games.
Working largely behind the scenes, they help minimize distractions so participants can focus on preparation, performance, and the overall Games experience.
Team Nunavut’s Chef de Mission, Sonja Lonsdale, serves as the Team Captain and provides leadership across the entire delegation. She is responsible for the team’s logistics, care, performance, and reputation, and leads Mission Staff in supporting Team Nunavut athletes, coaches, managers, and Youth Ambassadors throughout the Games.

COACHES, MANAGERS AND SPORT STAFF
Coaches and managers/ chaperones stay with the teams throughout the Games – they travel together on all transportation and stay in the Athletes Village. They supervise their teams and are responsible for their actions and behaviour.
TERRITORIAL SPORT ORGANIZATIONS (TSO)
TSOs identify and develop Team Nunavut participants and:
• Select and train the athletes
• Select coaching staff and ensure eligibility requirements are met
• Provide competition uniforms
• Coordinate positional travel to and from the AWG charters
• Coordinate logistics with mission staff
TEAM NUNAVUT AND SPORT INTEGRITY
Team Nunavut has important policies in place to make sure our staff, mission staff volunteers, coaches, and managers complete Sport Nunavut’s screening procedures. These include a criminal record check, child abuse registry check, and additional certifications as outlined below.
RESPONSIBLE COACHING MOVEMENT
The Responsible Coaching Movement (RCM) is a call to enact responsible coaching across Canada – on and off the field of play. In signing the Responsible Coaching Movement, Sport Nunavut has pledged to ensure all Games coaches follow these three steps:
RULE OF TWO
A safe sport environment ensures all coaches, staff, and administrators apply the Rule of Two, which means that all interactions and communications with participants are in open, observable, and justifiable settings, and two responsible adults — whether a coach, parent, staff or screened volunteer — are present.
BACKGROUND SCREENING
A secure sport environment is one where all mission staff, coaches and sport organization leaders are screened to meet requirements to be involved in sport. Screening includes a Criminal Record Check (with Vulnerable Sector Check and Enhanced Police Information Check).
TRAINING
A smart sport environment ensures coaches are trained and have the confidence and skills needed to effectively manage challenging situations. Team Nunavut coaches must complete the NCCP’s Making Ethical Decisions, Safe Sport Training, Understanding the Rule of Two and Making Headway. As well as meet all sport specific training established by the Canada Games Council and the National Sport Organizations.
SAFE SPORT TRAINING
Safe Sport is a program developed by the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) that works to ensure that every athlete can participate in their sport without physical, sexual or psychological abuse. All of Team Nunavut's mission staff, coaches and support staff MUST comoplete this training.
